Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the most effective procedure for weight loss surgery, according to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the National Institutes of Health.
It is the most frequently performed weight loss procedure in the United States. This surgical procedure involves partitioning off part of the upper stomach (as by stapling and separation from the lower stomach) to form a small pouch (15-30 cc), the remainder of the stomach is stapled shut and divided from the stomach pouch. The outlet of the pouch empties directly into the lower portion of the jejunum, thus bypassing calorie absorption. The jejunum is divided into upper and lower parts, and forming a Y-shaped union by attaching the free end of the lower part of the jejunum to a new outlet on the upper stomach pouch and attaching the free end of what was the upper jejunum to a new opening on the small intestine. The length of either segment of the intestine can be increased to produce lower or higher levels of malabsortion (see the image).
The procedure of choice for diabetic patients is gastric bypass, which may improve or resolve diabetes.
